How to choose noise-cancelling headphones for flying
Start with the failure you most want to avoid: cabin noise, pressure during a long session, a case that will not fit, a dead battery or no usable wired connection. Once that constraint is clear, the specification sheet becomes much easier to read.

Treat ANC performance as evidence, not a checkbox
An ANC label only confirms that noise cancelling exists. For flights, look for independent observations about steady low-frequency cabin noise, then keep wind, voices and sudden sounds as separate questions.
Decision check: Ask: which noise types were assessed, and did more than one independent source reach the same conclusion?
Comfort is fit-dependent
Low weight helps, but ear-cup depth, clamp, headband pressure, heat and glasses can change the result. A useful review preserves disagreement instead of converting personal fit reports into a universal score.
Decision check: Ask: were multi-hour sessions described, and are the fit limitations specific enough to compare with your own needs?
Compare the packed system, not only the headset
A folding hinge can reduce the case footprint, while a flat-swiveling or non-folding design may take more carry-on space. Headphone weight alone does not tell you the packed size or case weight.
Decision check: Ask: does it fold, what case is included, and are the published dimensions actually for the case rather than the headset?
Read battery numbers with their modes attached
Manufacturer maximums can change with ANC, immersive processing, codec, volume and test method. Quick-charge claims may also require a specific power adapter. Compare the conditions, not only the largest number.
Decision check: Ask: was ANC on, which codec or feature mode was active, and can playback continue while charging?
Keep a wired fallback for the parts Bluetooth cannot solve
Airline entertainment systems and depleted batteries make analog or USB audio useful. Check the connector, included cable, passive playback behavior and whether the microphone or headset controls still work when wired.
Decision check: Ask: what works with the power off, what disables Bluetooth, and is an in-flight adapter included?
